Kentucky’s science scores in the latest national assessment exceed the national average, but that may not be the case for long.
The National Assessment of Educational Progress, or NAEP is given every two years. Education Department spokeswoman Lisa Gross says the Commonwealth often does well in science. She says,
“The average scale score for our 8th graders in science is six points above the national average.”
Overall, 34 percent of Kentucky students were ranked proficient in science. That's the same score as the previous tests, two years ago. Meanwhile, the national average rose two points, to 32 percent proficiency. Further, white students in Kentucky tested lower than white students nationwide, but Kentucky’s African American students tested significantly higher than other African American students around the country.
